Baking a Zucchini Cake by Room 4

We baked a cake in the Cool Kids Kitchen.
We used zucchini that were growing in the Kitchen Garden.
We all helped and when it was ready to eat we shared it with Room 5.

Enviro Schools Silver Reflection

Late last year a group of Enviro students worked with Robyn from Enviro Schools and Andrea from the Waikato Regional Council. They discussed the things that make our school an Enviro School.
We looked at the Enviro School principles and the things we do at Hamilton East School that fit with those principles.

Look at how our ideas made this beautiful tree.

Here are the ideas we wrote down -
(we said a lot more when we were talking)

The great thing is after all our discussions and thinking we realised that Hamilton East School had earned a Silver Enviro Award.
Congratulations.

Kitchen Garden

Look at how our Kitchen Garden has been growing over the holidays!
The wildflowers look beautiful.

All of the plants have been growing so well with the sun and rain we have had.

Our Garden - Akomanga Rima

All of our class went down to the gardens with Sarah.
We looked at what was in our garden.
There was some potatoes that another group of children had grown.

"Hmmmmm...
what should we grow in our garden?"

Sarah suggested that we grow some basil and lettuces.
We were thinking that if our lettuces grew in time we could have a lettuce salad for lunch one day.

Sarah asked us if we knew how long it took for a lettuce to grow from a seed. We gave a lot of different answers.
Sarah then told us it takes about 7 to 14 days.

We got to sprinkle the seeds on the soil.

To help our seeds grow we had to water them.
The watering can was quite heavy.

We put in ice block sticks with lettuce and basil on them to remind us what we had planted and where it is too.

Not many of our swan plants had germinated.
Sarah said that the pots we had put seeds in were environmentally friendly and we could rip them up and put them in our garden to help the plants grow.

Growing and Eating by Room 4

We love going to the Kitchen Garden.
We especially love going with Sarah because she knows so much about plants.
We have planted seeds in our class garden.
We like to check up on how our plants are growing.
We even like to dance in the garden - especially on the mosaic tiles.
We check on the plum tree to see how it has changed.
We also like to harvest our vegetables.
Sometimes we go to the Cool Kids Kitchen.
We like to bake with the food we have grown from the Kitchen Garden.

Lavender by Room 4

Outside our classroom is a beautiful garden with lavender, camellias and rosemary.
If you look carefully you can sometimes see bees pollinating the flowers.
Recently we made some cuttings from the lavender so we can grow some more plants.
