Potted chives - Room 1

Potted Chives
We had little seeds,
And put them in a pot.
We put them in the sunshine,
And watered them a lot.

We waited and we waited.
Watched them grow and grow.
And then one day little shoots
Came out to say hello.

Tane Mahuta Day

Room 15 made a fantastic movie about Tane Mahuta.

Our class (Room 15) learnt about the giant Kauri tree called Tane Mahuta.  It is very old but we don't know exactly how old it is.  Tane Mahuta is somewhere between 1,250 and 2,500 years old!!!!  It lives up north in the Waipoua forest.
We did some measuring to see how long Tane Mahuta would be if it was lying along the ground.
Here is a video showing what we found out.

Room 6 visits Putikitiki

We went to Putikitiki to sketch the cabbage trees and after we had finished we explored the putikitiki playground. There were lots of things we could do.

Harvest Festival Room 12

On the last day of term the whole school had the harvest festival. Room 12 used pumpkins from our garden to make mini pumpkin muffins. We thought they were delicious. We also got to try lots of different food that other classes had made using the produce from our school garden.

Monarch Butterfly Life Cycles on PhotoPeach by Room 6

We have seen caterpillars and chrysalis in very funny places around our school.
Have you seen any in an unusual place lately?

Finding feijoa's by Room 4

FINDING FEIJOAS!

Our gorgeous garden is filled with delicious feijoas at the moment, so we took a trip down to collect some. They are on our windowsill while they finish ripening. We can't wait to eat them!

Harvest Festival - Room 9

Room 9 made crispy potato chips with yummy kiwi dip.

Most of the food prepared and eaten was taken from the school garden.

All of the food was prepared by the kids in the school.

It was fun to try new things and enjoy the yummy food.

Pizza - Room 6

We visited the garden today for the Hamilton East School Harvest Festival.
We collected basil, a capsicum and tomatoes from the garden.

We washed the produce and then we put them on our pizza. We also put some cheese on. We made the mozzarella cheese yesterday. It is going to be delicious.

What do you like to eat on pizza?

Plant life cycles - Room 12

We have been learning about the plant life cycle. As part of our learning we planted our own seeds so we can watch them grow, see the different stages of the cycle and discover what will help them grow.

This is what our planted seeds looked like on the first day. We could not see our seeds anymore because we covered them in soil.

We can't wait to watch them grow.

Pumpkin growing contest - Room 6

Last year the children at Hamilton East School planted pumpkins. They were harvested this week and some will be entered in the pumpkin competition that is happening at the Hamilton Gardens this Sunday.

Look at our photos from today. First we guessed the weight of the pumpkins at Positive Assembly, then Ms Jones weighed them. Some were 3 kilos and the biggest was about 45 kilos. Hine couldn't even lift it!

Room 6 went back to look at the pumpkins. We found the ones that our classes planted last year. Some children were in Room 8 so they looked at the pumpkin they had grown from their plant and some children helped plant the pumpkin for Room 6.

Last year Hine was in Room 14 and that pumpkin grew really funny. We decided it looked like a cat so we carved a cat face. We will enter it in the competition at the Hamilton Gardens on Sunday.

Baking in the kitchen

Today Room 6 baked scones with our some students from our buddy class. Next week we will bake with the rest of our buddy class. We went to the kitchen garden and picked some basil and tomatoes. Then we came back to class and baked our scones.

If you would like to make scones this is the recipe we used from the Edmonds website.

Room 6 children have the recipe in their Home books.
We all agreed they were very yummy.
Lucky we made enough to share with the buddies who missed out on baking this week.

Thank you to our buddies from Room 10 who took the photos.
